The Sennheiser HD 650 is a closed back, over the ear headphone that was released in 2012 and has been one of my favorite headphones for quite some time now. The reason I love it so much is because it’s comfortable to wear, sounds great, and can be used for both music listening as well as video gaming. It also comes with an amazing price tag compared to other similar headphones on the market. If you are looking for a new pair of headphones then this review will help you decide if the Sennheiser HD650 or the Audio Technica ATH-M 50x should be your next purchase.
The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x is a closed back, noise canceling over the ear headphone that features a flat frequency response curve from 20Hz – 20kHz. This means that the M50x won’t distort at high frequencies which makes them perfect for use when recording audio. They come with a detachable cable that measures 1 meter long and terminates into 3.5mm jacks. The M50x has a built-in microphone that allows users to take calls while using their headphones.
Sennheiser HD 650 vs Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Review 2023
Design & Build Quality:
When I first opened up the box containing the Audio-Technica Ath-M50x I noticed that they were packaged in a plastic bag instead of the usual cardboard packaging. While this may seem like a small detail, it actually made me feel more secure about opening the package since there wasn’t any chance of getting damaged during shipping. Once I removed the plastic bag I found that the headphones came wrapped in a clear plastic sleeve that protected the headphones from scratches and dust. There was no information printed on the outside of the box but inside we found a manual that contained all of the necessary information regarding how to set up the headphones.
When unboxing the headphones I immediately noticed that the build quality seemed to be very solid. The headband felt sturdy and didn’t feel cheap even though it had metal parts. The only thing that bothered me about the design was the fact that the left side of the headband had a slightly different shape than the right side. However, I quickly realized that this was just a minor issue and nothing that would bother most people.
The headphones themselves were extremely light weight and fit comfortably on my head without causing any discomfort. The ear cups were covered by soft leather material that provided good sound isolation and kept out external noises. The ear pads were removable and could be replaced with custom foam pads if needed. The overall look of the headphones was sleek and modern.
Comfort & Fit:
One of the biggest complaints I hear about over the ear headphones is that they don’t provide enough comfort. When wearing the Audio-Technica Ath-M50x I didn’t experience any pain or discomfort and they stayed securely on my ears throughout the entire day. The headband was designed in such a way that it allowed for plenty of movement and rotation making sure that the headphones never slipped off my head.
The ear cups were large and covered almost the entire area around my ears. The padding was thick and cushioned against pressure points. The only problem I encountered was that the ear cup coverings were not completely flush with the rest of the headphones. This caused some air to leak through the gaps between the ear cup covers and the rest of the headphones which resulted in a slight amount of ambient noise leaking in.
Sound Quality:
I tested the Audio-Technica M50x with music tracks ranging from classical to hip hop. I listened to songs from artists including Michael Jackson, Drake, Eminem, Jay Z, Kanye West, Rihanna, Adele, Coldplay, and many others. In every case I heard excellent sound quality from the headphones.
The highs were crisp and clean while the mids and lows were smooth and detailed. Bass response was strong and punchy. Overall, these headphones performed excellently at reproducing music.
The Sennheiser HD 650 are known for their high level of sound quality and I can confirm that they still hold up today. They have been one of the top selling models for years now and continue to perform well. The bass response was powerful and deep. Vocals sounded natural and the highs were crisp and clear. These headphones also excelled at reproducing music. I listened to a wide variety of genres including rock, pop, jazz, blues, country, R&B, rap, and electronic dance music. All of them sounded great.
